Research

My research focuses on public ethics, organizational ethics and professional ethics. I pay particular attention to the following concepts: ethical sensitivity, ethical leadership, ethical decision making and ethical culture. My interests are rooted in critical theory, moral psychology and applied ethics.

My research program, which is supported by funding from organizations such as the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé (FRQS), the Robert-Sauvé Institute for Research on Occupational Health and Safety (IRSST) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), began during my doctoral and postdoctoral studies aimed at developing a scientific program in the field of ethics. This program, called Towards Ethical Responsibility and Authenticity (TERA), was enriched through the participation of contributors from several different disciplines, namely the humanities, social sciences and health sciences.

Since 2019, I have been interested in the ethical and social impacts of technology, as well as the transformations and innovations induced by technical systems (AI) observed in different sectors of human life. I have been running the International Observatory on the Societal Impacts of AI and Digital Technologies (OBVIA) since 2019, which I have led since its inception.

I am interested in new knowledge creation that is at the intersection of disciplines. My approach is based on interdisciplinary work which, for me, is essential to understanding the growing complexity of the modern world. The work on complex thinking by Edgar Morin inspires my thinking. The first formulation of complex thinking dates from 1982 in Edgar Morin’s book Science with Conscience (1982). This author found that, in the postmodern world, the fragmentation of knowledge often occurs within narrow disciplinary silos that limit our ability to grasp reality as a whole. This reality is increasingly complex and requires an understanding of the relationships between the whole and each part:

''The aim of method research is not to find a unitary principle for all knowledge, but to indicate the emergence of complex thought, which is not reduced to science or philosophy, but allows their intercommunication by operating dialogical loops.'' Edgar Morin.
