Artificial Intelligence and Ethics
Since 2019, Lyse Langlois is the CEO of the International Observatory on the Societal Impacts of AI and Digital Technology (OBVIA), a major research initiative funded by the Fonds de recherche du Québec to the tune of $22.5 million.
The AI ethic is an ethic based on issues that are at the intersection of organizations, social actors and the technologies available to them.
Lyse Langlois participated in the validation of the Montreal Declaration for the Responsible Development of AI as a member of its scientific committee.
She is a researcher at the Intelligence and Data Institute within the Ethics, Confidentiality and Social Acceptability Research Area of Laval University.
She is also associate researcher at the Institute for Data Exploitation and Transfer in Artificial Intelligence (IVADO), the Institute for Research and Transfer in Artificial Intelligence (IA) of the Université de Montréal, co-lead of the AI Governance and Implementation Cluster and co-researcher in the IAR3 grant application for the Apogée Program, which was funded to the tune of $124.5 million.
Lyse Langlois was co-lead of the working group on the societal impacts of AI on democracy, culture and the environment, an initiative established in 2023 by the Conseil de l'innovation du Québec to make recommendations on AI coaching. This work was presented to the Government of Quebec in February 2024.
In 2019, Lyse Langlois was invited to give a TED TALK by TEDxQuébec on the general theme: Imagine if... Her talk with the question: What world do we want to live in? AI serving humans, or its opposite.

This talk, given just after the launch of OBVIA in 2019, allowed me to highlight some ethical issues that emerged at that time. The image of the snail leaving traces on the web, showed the dangers with regard to marketing strategies of large technology companies. This was the beginning of my commitment in researching the societal impacts of AI, and in action research organizations like OBVIA.
Ethics at the heart of AI

In this episode of "What Matters Today", Jérôme Duberry, Executive Director of the Tech Hub, interviews Professor Lyse Langlois, CEO of the International Observatory on the Societal Impacts of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technology (OBVIA) at Laval University. They explore the topic of ethics at the heart of artificial intelligence, based on the latest report published by OBVIA. Lyse Langlois stresses the importance of applied ethics and collective responsibility in a context of rapid evolution of artificial intelligence, warning against a checklist approach that could divert ethics to a simple formality. It advocates mandatory ethics courses and the development of ethical competency as an aptitude, fostering deliberation and ongoing awareness to guide the evolution of AI ethics.
The place and role of interdisciplinarity in building new knowledge in AI
